Posidonia Oceanica, an endemic plant of the Mediterranean Sea, is fundamental to the balance of this basin, producing over 80% of coastal oxygen. Its meadows, true "lungs of the Mediterranean”, are vital habitats for over 350 marine species, offering shelter, food, and coastal protection from erosion. Unfortunately, more than 50% of these meadows have already disappeared due to human activities such as anchoring and bottom trawling, which often cause irreversible damage. For this reason, in addition to protection, the restoration of these ecosystems is crucial.

To counter this decline, One Ocean Foundation established in 2018, is actively engaged in protecting marine ecosystems and biodiversity, as well as reforesting "marine forests" through the Blue Forest project, with a focus on the Mediterranean and Posidonia.

FPT proudly supports One Ocean Foundation's mission, recognizing the vital importance of marine conservation. The company has provided a vessel equipped with two NEF series engines to directly support Posidonia repopulation operations.

The recovery of these plants is complex: Posidonia is a fragile ecosystem that takes hundreds of years to regenerate naturally, making active reforestation interventions indispensable. At the same time, passive recovery is fundamental, protecting existing meadows through the establishment of new marine protected areas, stricter regulations on anchoring, and the installation of buoy fields. Eliminating the causes of threats is a priority, otherwise, every recovery effort risks being in vain.

For this reason, the foundation combines on-the-ground actions with education and awareness campaigns, promoting cultural and operational change. Posidonia, in addition to producing oxygen, plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change by sequestering significant amounts of carbon from the atmosphere – estimated at over 270 tons per hectare, equivalent to ten hectares of tropical forest.
