Load Lifter
Uxbridge, CANADA

Load Lifter, founded in 1976 by Hedley Thomas, produces rough terrain forklifts used in construction, mining, agriculture, lumber, and other industrial business. Located in Uxbridge (Toronto), Ontario, Canada, it is a family business now led by three brothers of the Thomas family, Paul, David, and Donald. Dave Tughan, their Operations Manager, handles the engine selection to power all their equipment.

As emission standards for Tier 4 Final were introduced in North America, Load Lifter began searching for engines to meet the new standard. Load Lifter had used engines supplied by Perkins since their founding and was in fact the one of largest user of engines in the Toronto area for them. Load Lifter realized the engines being supplied were in fact FPT Industrial engines, privately labeled by Perkins to meet the Tier 4 standards.

Perkin’s distribution network was stretched to supply their customers and shipments to Load Lifter were late and didn’t feel they were getting the support they needed. Application testing was facing challenges and delays. Service and supply issues were increasing as Perkins had been purchased by Caterpillar, leaving this once-loyal customer to consider new options. In 2019, Load Lifter prepared two machines with Perkins Synco 2.8- and 3.6-liter engines and after displaying them at the ARA Rental Show, put them out to test and were not satisfied with the performance.

It’s been a smooth transition to using FPT Industrial engines for Load Lifter. FPT Industrial’s F34 Tier 4 Final engines have proven to be powerful, dependable, and technologically innovative. Being DPF-free and fuel-efficient, the maintenance and total cost of ownership on the engines and lifts are lower than competitors. In addition, Load Lifter uses the N67 engine in the larger 4400 series of forklifts. In fact, as of mid-2023, Load Lifter is using FPT Industrial’s N45 engines in the production of their Reach 1056 Telescopic Handler. They are responding to the market need for high-performing large lifts that can do it all -- move, turn, and lift -- all at once.
