Davis Diesel is a dealer of marine engines and generators, providing service in Leland and Beaufort, North Carolina. Over the past 20 years, owner Nate Davis has built a solid reputation, offering specialized and personalized attention to each customer. In 2020, he began repowering fishing and charter boats with FPT Industrial diesel engines.

Davis recently gutted his own fishing boat, a 35’ Scopinich christened the Nuts N Bolts. It’s an older fishing vessel that needed major renovation. In just three months during the spring of 2022, Davis stripped, refinished, replumbed, rewired, and installed the engines and exhaust system. As a marine engine dealer, he knew the best products to specify for each part of the rebuild. He also recognized that a robust parts network was vital to the project. As Davis states, “Key was power density, ease of maintenance, price point and a strong parts network.”

In the year since the rebuild, and after more than 160 hours of run time, the Nuts N Bolts has demonstrated “amazing performance and fuel efficiency, and zero issues,” says Davis. Sea trials proved more power than pitch in the props, and Davis has re-pitched the props twice. In the latest wide-open throttle test, the engines rated 3,200 RPM, occasionally hitting 3,300. “They are very powerful engines,” Davis says.

“I can go out into the gulf stream — 60 miles out — troll all day and come back and burn 130 gallons of fuel. In other boats, I would burn close to 200 gallons for the same trip. That’s 35% less fuel,” Davis explains.
And if any issues arise, Davis can take confidence in FPT’ Industrial’s extensive parts network. Through an agreement with CNH dealers across the North America, FPT Industrial engine parts are readily accessible when needed.

Fish are biting once again for the Nuts N Bolts.
