In the FPT engine belt drive system, the service belts, mounted on the the belt pulley of the crankshaft, enable the various external engine accessories to be driven, such as the alternator, air conditioning compressor, water pump, and sometimes hydraulic pumps. They are always complemented by a tensioner to ensure proper belt tension. There are also toothed belts, used to ensure the precise position of the crankshaft relative to the overhead camshafts, as in the F1A engine timing system.
