SUCH A SUSTAINABLE YEAR

ABOUT THIS WEB SERIES

Have you ever thought about what goes into a bottle of wine? There is a long list of metaphorical ingredients beyond just the grapes, and it is even longer when it comes to sustainable wine.
We are here in the breathtaking Langhe wine-growing area, more specifically at the Fontanafredda estate, where the grapes for Barolo Cru La Rosa are just about to be harvested.

Among its prestigious rows of vines lies a collaboration between three leaders in their fields: FPT Industrial, leader in low-emission engines; New Holland Agriculture, leader in tractor production; and Fontanafredda, the historic winery founded in 1858 by Vittorio Emanuele II, the first King of Italy, which currently has 120 hectares of certified organic vineyards.

The partners have joined forces and expertise to take a large step towards sustainability in viticulture and carry out an ambitious project. The heart of the partnership is the supply of a New Holland TK Methane Power prototype crawler vineyard tractor fueled by a FPT Industrial F28 Natural Gas engine running on biomethane, which will be put to work in the Vigna La Rosa cru that produces the grapes for the legendary Barolo of the same name, a wine which has been included in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of the world’s best wines. The biomethane engine model designed for Fontanafredda was developed on the basis of a New Holland Agriculture crawler vineyard tractor and ensures a net-zero carbon footprint, as the biomethane that powers the engine is not a fossil fuel but is rather produced through anaerobic digestion of agricultural waste.

Everything is set for the world’s first zero-emission Barolo wine harvest. Watch the web series to find out more about what’s new among the vineyards of the Langhe. Watch the web series to discover more about “Such a sustainable year” through the voices of the various players in the world’s first zero-emission Barolo wine vintage!
