ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY IN PRODUCT AND MANUFACTURING PROCESSES

FPT Industrial has always been committed to introducing innovative technological solutions which offer optimum performance, reduce fuel consumption and minimize polluting emissions.

FPT Industrial adopts the program of World Class Manufacturing in order to progressively and continuously reduce the impacts of production processes, and implements a management system in compliance with the requirements of international standards as of:

WORLD CLASS MANUFACTURING

The World Class Manufacturing is a manufacturing system that encompasses all plant processes, from safety to the environment and from maintenance to logistics and quality, with the objective of constantly improving production performance.

WCM purpose is to maximize production system performance in accordance with logistic plans and defined quality objectives through:

 

  • Improvement of processes
  • Improvement of product quality
  • Control and gradual reduction of production costs
  • Flexibility in meeting market and customer requirements
  • Involvement and motivation of people who operate on industrial processes

World Class Manufacturing activities are periodically assessed by qualified auditors.

Based on a global ranking of plants, awards are delivered to plants by the World Class Manufacturing Association during the Award Ceremony once a year.

The overall plant score is the result of evaluation on technical and management pillars, assigning a score between 0 to 5 for each pillar (bronze award ≥50 points, silver award ≥ 60 points, gold award ≥ 70 points, world class award ≥ 85 points).

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

FPT Industrial Environmental Plan has set targets throughout the entire organization:

  • Air Emissions: continuous monitoring of main emissions that may result from manufacturing processes or from the combustion of fossil fuels
  • Water Management: constant efforts in reduction of total water consumption and in keeping a high quality of discharged water
  • Waste Management: improvement of the waste management method either through a reduction in the amount of generated waste and through increasing rates of recovery and reuse of the same

CARBON FOOTPRINT

 

  • A carbon footprint project has been included in the sustainability plan, within FPT Industrial environmental responsibility
  • The carbon footprint project is aimed to identify improvement to the product from concept to design, including machining, assembling, manufacturing process, maintenance, recycle or reuse and dismission
  • FPT Industrial started the project with the Life Cycle Assessment of F1C engine, based on standards ISO 14040 – ISO 14044 and ISO/TS 14067

The LCA methodology includes 4 phases:

  • Goal and scope definition: this step define objectives, functional unit, system boundaries, data categories, assumptions and restrictions
  • Life Cycle Inventory: this is the most significant part of the project dedicated to data gathering relating to manufacturing process, purchasing of raw materials process and description of system input (fuels) and output (liquid, solid and gaseous waste)
  • Life Cycle Impact Assessment: the evaluation of the environmental impacts is realized through elaboration of inventory data using a specific software. Greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout the product life cycle are aggregated into the indicator of Global Warming Potential (GWP), which provides a measure of the carbon footprint
  • Life Cycle Interpretation: the results of the analysis are matched with the objectives in order to advance recommendations and improvements

BIODIVERSITY

 

In FPT Industrial the integration of manufacturing plants into the local habitat further strengthens responsible approach to sustainability.

The commitment is to contribute in the variety of natural species protection. For this reason, FPT Industrial applies the methodology of Biodiversity Value Index (BVI), studied in cooperation with Science, Life and Biology department of Università degli Studi in Turin.

Current biodiversity analysis:

  • The FPT Industrial has completed the application of the BVI methodology in Bourbon Lancy plant in France. The analysis demonstrated a low level of anthropic pressure and an elevated biodiversity index level
  • In Foggia (Italy) plant the API analysis (Anthropic Pressure Index) is under evaluation to measure the environmental impact in the area of the manufacturing activity
